Should My husband and I switch our insurance?

I went to the urgent care doctors a few

weeks ago. Turns out I had strep throat with a 101.5°f fever and pus in my throat. Anyways the insurance I am covered on is my husbands. I dont understand as with this insurance I have to wait to get a bill in the mail. Just to get some pills and be in an office for 5 minutes I have to pay $240.24 according to this bill i got in the mall. Should I get my husband to switch the insurance? I used to work for the same company as my husband and they gave two choices the one I had before i got married didnt do this. I hate to pay $240.24 that should of been a $20 copay and thats it

Well, I really liked the answers you got.   And, most are right.  You probly either have a high deductible or are using services not in your network.   And, at all cost, do not go to Urgent care, always go to your regular doctor.

You could shop around for other insurance in the marketplace.    Find an insurance agent or broker to shop it around for you.   You can also call Kaiser or Blue Cross directly to get quotes from them.     You don't say how much your husband is paying for your health insurance.   And, possibly he does not have you on any health insurance at all.    If you go to a regular doctor and ask for the "cash"price for a visit it would probly be less than what your paying.    Many doctor's charge less if you pay "cash".

You may not be able to till open enrollment or he gets a new job.

It would be a reckless decision to switch with only HALF of the information needed.  COMPARE the policies to see if you have the best of the two or if the other is better for you and him.  Just because you used to work for them and before, it would not have cost you that much doesn't mean a lot.  Since then, they could have changed insurance companies, changed plans, or modified the plans offered.  It's time for a comparison.

Look at what all is covered in each policy and the deductibles and copays for each, and look at the cost for each policy before you decide.

You are forgetting about the deductible. Check you bill carefully to see if anything from the insurance was credited to the balance. Are you sure the urgent care and doctors accept your insurance? You can't just switch insurance plans. Most companies only allow it at the beginning of the year.

    You can't switch insurance mid-year.

There are many reasons why this could have occurred:

    - you have a PPO plan instead of an HMO plan

    - you went to a clinic that is not part of your in-network group.

    - you have a higher deductible than you previously did.

During open enrollment, if your husband is able to purchase different plans you can evaluate the options then.  It might be that the reduced monthly cost for this plan, makes it a better deal.

You haven't yet met your deductible for the year, dear.

Zero deductible plans no longer exist.

If you have an ACA approved plan, the deductible doesn't apply to your annual preventive care visit which may be why you are confused.

The urgent care probably was not in your network. Very complicated to figure out. Switching insurance does not make things better.

New deductible...thats why you got hit with the full bill.

This is the new standard for health insurance, I would bet there arent any better plans available.  Either pay the higher visit cost or pay more in premiums...either way...

Why wouldn't you just go to your GP instead of an urgent care?  Would have likely been an even lower charge...
