University math problem?

The sum of two real numbers is A and the sum of their reciprocals is B, where A and B are nonzero. What is the value of the sum of the squares of these two real numbers? Could you also show your work so I can follow through with your logic, please? Thanks

     x + y = a and 1 / x + 1 / y = b ≡ [ y + x ] / xy ≡ a / xy===> x y = a / b

    (x + y)² = a² ≡ x² + 2 xy + b² ≡ x² + 2 a / b + y² ===> x² + y² = a² - 2 a / b ...

    and a " university math " student should have found this to be trivial
