Is this common for dogs?

My dog does this very cute thing where she places her front legs over your shoulders, sits on your lap, and presses her torso against yours to imitate a hug. It's adorable and I love it very much, but I've never seen or heard of another doing this before.

Is this odd/uncommon and special to her? Or is it relatively normal and I just happened to not encounter another dog that does it by chance alone?

In MY opinion, any dog that puts its paws on an owner shoulders is, in dog language acting dominant and disrespectful. I NEVER allow my dog to put his paws on me OR jump up at me.

Of course it all depends on the dogs genetic temperament but its not usual for a submissive natured dog to `dare` to put its paws high up on its owner.

Plus of course....what it means, can be interpreted in the way that the dogs owner WANTS it to be interpreted as, and not what it really means.

Lots of owners tend to anthropomorphise a dog and see what they want to see especially if it mimics a human action.

So....Believe what you want, it`s your choice.

My Dalmatian did this all the time. Many dogs do this, for comfort.

It's relatively normal.  Dogs are known for seeing a human do something, and then doing the same thing as best they can.  Look up "dogs who sit like humans" and "dogs who smile".
