How do you test colorless substances in a column chromatography fraction?
After separating everything into fractions, if the solvent and solute are both colorless, how do you test to see which molecules are in which fraction? Can you use thin layer chromatography to test colorless substances, or would you have to use another method?

You could certainly spot the eluate from the column on a TLC plate, if you know that you can detect what you are looking for there. You could also use UV spectrophotometry if the compound absorbs some wavelength of UV light. You could use any test that you know can detect the substance you are looking for.
