We tried to back rebels who were not jihadists but had a lot of trouble finding the right ones. Then when Obama drew a red line in the sand after the gas attack that killed many civilians including children he chickened out and made a deal that brought the Russians in big time. The Russians established air bases , naval bases and brought in a lot of troops all on the side of Assad and we left very few forces in Syria to help the opposition and Trump reduced our forces even more so we have very little sway in Syria and it is only a matter of time before Assad and the Russians wipe out the last few pockets of resistance including the civilians trapped there. Then we will have no role at all and failed to stop the worst genocide in recent years.
