    I'm going to assume the 230 lbs refers to the apples and the crate.  Let X be the weight of apples and Y is the weight of the crate.

    X + Y = 230 lbs

    0.2X + Y = 90 lbs

    Substract the second equation from the first.

    0.8X = 140 lbs

    X = 175 lbs.  The crate weighs 55 lbs

    check

    If 4/5 of the apples are sold, 1/5 remains or 35 lbs.  35 lbs + 55 lbs = 90 lbs

    let c = weight of crate and a = weight of apples

    Initially the full crate of apples weights 230 lbs:

    c + a = 230

    After 4/5 of the apples are sold, the crate and the remaining 1/5 of the apples weighs 90 lbs.

    c + a/5 = 90 : multiply by 5

    5c + a = 450

    Difference of the two equations:

    5c + a - (c+a) = 450 - 230

    4c = 220

    c = 55 lbs

    The crate weighs 55 lbs.

    A full crate of apples weighed 230 pounds.

      After 4/5 of the apples were sold,

      the remaining apples and crate weighed 90 pounds.

      The weight of the crate when empty is ________ pounds.

       The weight apples + weight of crate = 230 pounds

       The weigh of 1/5 apples + weight of crate = 90 pounds

       4/5 apples' weight = (230 - 90) pounds

       The apples' weight = (140)(5/4) = 175 pounds

       The weight of the crate = (230 - 175) pounds = 55 pounds
