Deposited $87, got $700. ?

I’m currently out running errands with my sister and she had ended up stopping by an atm to deposit some money because one month she paid an electric company too much money. They sent her a refund check and she wanted to deposit it. When we got to the atm, she had inserted her card and was asked question (obviously). She had tapped, deposit check, checking account twice (I suppose to confirm that’s the account she wanted the money to go too), and than it told use to hold on as it was reading the check. After reading it came to the next screen saying the amount being deposited was $700. We thought that was weird and I said to just continue, it might fix itself. She continued and it said money was deposited. We had then checked the amount on her mobile app and there it was, $700. $500 of it was on hold. I figured maybe they were confirming but it had given her $200 of it. This is the first time I had seen/heard of this so I have no idea, obviously lol. She was asked to enter the amount of the check as the machine had taken a picture of it. I have the picture of the check on the receipt. We, as of right now, are going to wait until Monday when the bank opens and take it in and figure it all out. In the meantime, however, I figured I’d ask to see what could be up. Thanks!

Update:

She was not asked to enter an amount when depositing the check. Sorry, meant that not that she was asked SHE WAS NOT ASKED, as it had taken a picture of it!!

Many years ago I deposited my paycheck by wire transfer in the bank. The next day I found out the bank credited me two times so I got twice the money. What to do ,what to do? I told the bank about it and they said thank you. I asked what would happen if I kept the extra money? They said banks don't make mistakes and they would eventually find out and I could be charged with bank fraud. I was sweet with one of the bank tellers and she invited me to the bank's Christmas Party inside the bank. Lots of goodies to eat but no booze. International City Bank in Warner Robins, Georgia.

The check was made out for $700, but it is FAKE and the bank WILL remove the entire amount from her account WHEN, not if, it is returned unpaid.

The electric company DID NOT send the check. The scam operator that sent the check will demand she return the excess refund to a different address than the normal address for paying bills.

The scanner misread the check and you should have edited it before you completed the deposit. The bank will certainly catch the error, so you'd better be at the bank when it opens on Monday.

Software glitch, don't spend the extra money, they will realize it and fix the problem which means taking the extra money out of her account.  if that overdrafts her, that's her problem.

It's some kind of glitch.....don't spend the money......

It's odd they even sent her a check they usually just apply the credit to your account if you over pay
