Its name comes from COronaVirus and the ID is 19 because it was first identified in 2019 (December).

There are various types of viruses that are close to this Corona strain, so they wanted to identify it with a unique name.

It is the WHO (World Health Organization) that gave it this name.

Coronaviruses are a family of viruses, many of which cause respiratory diseases in various mammals.  One of the most frequent causes of the "common cold" is a coronavirus discovered in the mid-1960s.  The name comes from their surface appearance under an electron microscope.  Projections from their surfaces look like crowns.

COVID is short for "Coronavirus Disease."

The "19" refers to the year it was first seen - 2019.

Put them all together and it means "Novel coronavirus-caused respiratory disease discovered in 2019."
