    I'm sure we descended from species that started making bread and cake as soon as they started to regularly use fire as a tool, especially for cooking. :That most certainly predates Egyptians, as some other answers suggested. Evidence of the first controlled use of fire dates to over 1 million years ago, before homo sapiens.

    It started with the ancient Egyptians, but the cake was different from today it was more bread like sweetened with honey, the ancient Europeans would start baking cakes we make today like fruit cake and gingerbread cake.
