Oh, it's hardly the worst year ever. There are lots of miserable years throughout history. You could have been born a slave in ancient Egypt, or a peasant in medieval Russia, or anyone in the path of the Mongol invasions. Even in terms of epidemics, this one pales beside the Black Death of the middle ages. It's all a matter of perspective.
