What are opposites ? ?
Like when we say what’s the opposite of blank what are we actually imagining or thinking of does opposite mean not ? Like if I say what’s the opposite of greedy am I saying what’s something that’s different from greedy ? If so then anything can be opposite . Please don’t give me a bunch of opposite examples I need to know the meaning .

Opposite means that it's the exact contrast of the word in question, related to the two word's definitions. So, sorry for this singular example. If I'm greedy (I keep things to myself; selfish), the opposite could be generous (I give things away out of the goodness of my heart). So it's not just any word that's "different", it's one that completely contradicts greedy, in this example.

Not exactly. Black is the opposite of white. Yes is the opposite of no. Frowning is the opposite of smiling. You can't say being hungry is the opposite of greedy, because thats a similar thing but not the same. The opposite of greedy would be something like giving or generous because instead of being selfish and taking everything, you're giving out whatever you can no matter how hungry. I don't understand why examples aren't good enough, describing the word opposite is quite challenging when there aren't really any other words that compare. Opposite is being completely different from *blank* but also being related to it.

Opposites are two things that oppose each other, meaning they are completely different, almost inverted from each other.
Example: the opposite of dry is wet. Even though something moist is different from dry too, the COMPLETE opposite of dry is wet.

The simply definition is something completely different. You don't want examples, but it is impossible for someone, like you, to grasp the significant of opposites without them. To keep them to a minimum, here are three: 1. Empty and full; 2. Hot and cold; and, 3. Day and night.
