Can criminals keep the money they make through illegal means after they're arrested?

Like, mafia. Can they keep the money they make off racketeering if they go to prison? Or can a black market dealer keep the money they make from the profits of their sales? I assume that people who like, rob banks or people can't keep that money though, rightfully. But the money that's not outright stolen, can criminals keep it?

Thanks for any help.

Update:

How would one file taxes on money they make through less-than-squeaky-clean methods?

Laws depends on country where I live "proceeds of crime" is the term given to money or assets gained by criminals during the course of their criminal activity. and is often seized...so property, land, business, vehciles, designer goods etc are seized and sold at auction

    In what country or state?

In the UK, a court can make a confiscation order to make them pay it back.

Theoretically, no. It can be seized, if it can be found. But sometimes they've hidden it or spent it.

Of course they don't.  It's disturbing that you'd even have to ask this question.
