Firstly you should understand that it is not cancer. In fact it is the result of a chronic illness. Any disease, if not administered well can result into cachexia. Change your category from cancer to the relevant one. Regarding your question, most of the times it is terminal. The reason is; it is diagnosed very late and cachexia happens when patient is facing the last stage of his/her disease. There are little chances that the patient will survive. Still, God knows the best.

It's the extreme thinness that appears with people who are too sick to eat, caused by uncontrolled disease.
