Haven't worn retainers in 7 months?

Is it fine to wear retainers after not wearing them for months? I can still put them on my teeth but they're tight and my teeth get a little sore.

You really are supposed to wear them for the rest of your life which my mom thought didn't seem right when she heard an orthodontist say so. I've worn mine religiously for the first 6 years after I got my braces off way back in the 00s until my 12-year-molar grew in, causing my top one to not fit but it was never fixed; that was partially why I stopped wearing my retainers about 10 years ago and my bottom teeth really shifted. But I say that if yours still fit you, that's great. Continue to wear them and have them replaced every few years. Unfortunately, my orthodontist didn't offer me new retainers when mine got really gnarly. Yes, it's fine to wear them.
