Why is polygamy illegal but  extramarital affairs aren't?

Why is polygamy illegal in the United States when having an affair or an open marriage isn't? It seems like they accomplish the same thing but are treated very differently. If anything polygamy seem the more stable of the tree situations mentioned.

Though marriage is now a legal term with complex effects on finances and such situations, it originated from religious beliefs. It was believed that only a man and woman could wed and so that became the law. Gay marriage was rightfully made legal and I believe the same will eventually be true for polygamy.

Because you don't have to be married to your side dishes.

It's immoral, a waste of tax payer dollars for having 40 kids and soooo dangerously disrespectful.

Cheating is like taking a dump in the woods. No one has to know.

An affair doesn't create legal and financial obligations or privileges like a marriage does. You can actually "marry" as many people as your beliefs allow for, but not in a legal sense.
