Matching gift amounts for charities?

How can you verify the facts if a charity claims if you give a certain amount like $50 to their charity, that a matching amount is donated like they claim? Sounds like a way to induce more people just to give more if they think their gift is matched. I know that websites that are charity watchdogs may not go into that kind of detail if you look up the legitimacy of certain charities.

If you look at the fine print, they will typically say the matching donation is up to a certain amount.  So I could donate $50,000 and match everyone's donation $1 for $1 or even more but it only goes up to that amount.   The charity runs the ad and goes out for donations and raises $1 million from people.  they get that $1 million + $50,000 from me.
