Quesiton on preposition "by".?
The following phrase was found in the article about Mohamed Ali.
But Ali was soon back in the ring, losing against Joe Frazier in the Fight of
the Century in 1971,reclaiming the heavyweight champion title from George
Foreman in the Rumble in the Jungle in 1974, and then winning against
Frazier in the Thrilla in Manila in 1975. By 1978, he had become the 1rst boxer
to, win three; heavyweight' championships.
I think the latter part of this phrase means that Mohamed Ali is very boxer who won all of three heavyweight championships and he did it in 1978 for the first time.
Is my understanding correct?
Thank you for teaching me.

No- it means before 1978. He won one fight in 1971, one in 1974, and one in 1975. Those happened BEFORE 1978.
"By" means before the time specified.
"By the age of 30, I had visited 10 countries." The visits are at unspecified times, but they all occurred before I turned 30.
I wish people wouldn't answer grammar questions when they have no idea what they're talking about!

In this context, "by" means at the time of, with prior time elapsed. Specifically, the period started in 1975, but the statement refers to what occurred three years later in 1978.
