Most will say 38, but you have to deduct for road right of way and retention.  The answer is something less than 38.

First, subtract off the amount given to the city.

    35 - 1.75 = ?

Then, find out how many times 0.875 can go into the result.  This means dividing the result by 0.875.  That will be your answer.  Be sure to show your work.

Source(s): Thought process for competitions: recognize that 0.875 is 7/8. Ignore the amount given to the city. 35 / (7/8) = (35/7) * 8 = 40. That's the estimate. Now subtract out the number of lots given to the city, which is conveniently 2.
