It is not recommended! Often the laminate floor is "floating" and as such will not provide the stable base for the new flooring.

Lowes (one of many sources for both) has installation instructions on their site which can be read with a PDF viewer. If they carry the brand you want to install - down load and read the instructions.

If they do not carry the brand you want to install- then go to the manufactures site to get the installation instructions.

There are a lot of solid hardwood floor suppliers out there, maybe one would not stipulate other wise- but I am sure that with there being a possible warranty issue all of them will state that such material is not a suitable surface for installation.

    "Can" it? Sure.

"Should" it? No. Most of the time you though you saved not doing the removal of the old floor gets used cutting door bottoms, taking more time cutting baseboards, dealing with the laminate's potential "floating" installation.

So... you get to do it right the first time or you get to do it again... and all of the sudden, you used more than 2x more time and effort doing it again when you pull up the new floor to get to the old floor to remove... and you get to buy more new flooring.

Baseboards are going to look funny. Cut all of the doors, etc. Better to remove the old flooring.
