Both the United States and Great Britain claimed the Oregon Territory.  Spain only explored the area.  The U.S. and Great Britain split Oregon 50-50 with the Oregon Treaty of 1846.

British. We were equal opportunity thieves back then.

It was settled by pioneers after we had gained independence.

Neither. It was Swiss. After all, the Swiss discovered it, and even made up the name. "Oregon", as you probably know, is Swiss for "New Switzerland". Hope this helped.

In the 1800s there were British and Russians colonies on the west coast of the Oregon Country. That's why John L. O'Sullivan started to preach Manifest Destiny, he wanted Americans to claim all of the Oregon Country before the British and/or Russians did.

From 1812 - 1841, the Russians even had a settlement at Fort Ross in Northern California.
