READ YOUR STATE DRIVER'S MANUAL. IT'S A FREE DOWNLOAD FROM THEIR WEBSITE. In most states the answer is YES, you have to retake the written test. 

In my state the answer is Yes . . . even if you lose some of the paperwork, you start from the beginning again.  But I'm sure it's different in different states, counties, regions, territories, countries . . . . since we don't know where you live we can't say more than contact your local licensing authority.
