Why should I work when unemployed people make twice as much as me?

My roommate has done nothing but drink the last 3 month's and I've supported him working at a gas station overnight for $10/hour. He was a waiter til he got laid off because of the virus. He made no where near the $875/week he's getting now from unemployment.

He didn't even apply for unemployment til last week. Now he just got a check in the mail for $9000 for unemployment back to March.

Update:

Does the government care I'm actually out there risking my health and safety overnight while lazy bums are mooching getting drunk?

Then act a fool on the job so you can get let go, then you can complain when your unemployment runs out and it's much harder to find a job because off all those looking for work and because of the reason you were let go from your previous job.

Becuz he lost his job due to this pandemic. He did not choose to get laid off and be jobless. But you are choosing to be jobless. That is not the same.

The government knows how bad the situation is and they care about boosting the economy. They wanted ppl to stay home, eat and drink. No more new infection cases so they can control the situation. If they don’t give free money to the unemployed it’s gonna be chaos. Besides it’s temp boost in unemployment. Hopefully the virus disappears one day.

Edit: Yes he government care. If your job didn’t make any changes so you’d work in safe conditions, you can report that. I think the EDD webpage talks about that.

And it's temporary... Supposedly that extra cash ends in July. He'll have to get back to work or find new soon enough.

I mean I was getting it too (not nearly that much) but have returned to work so that may be it for me unless my hours drop off a bit after the amount given to play catch up this and last week. Little envious I may have to say goodbye already to that extra cash, but it is what it is and I'm fortunate to have a job that was safe from going away and only waiting for my return. Unlike some people I will not have to face an unexpected job hunt.

Go collect unemployment yourself instead of being jealous.
