How can I remove Linux Mint 18.1 from an old computer hd.  I lost the password.?

    To remove it, you need to replace it with something else? Easiest option is to simply re-install Mint 18.1 again, from scratch and you can set a new password.

    If the drive is external already (removed), you may need a special utility under Windows to clear the partitions, as Windows disk manager does not recognize them (in most cases).

    One can always recover from a lost password on Linux.  Just boot from live or recoveryoption from a DVD, mount the old root filesystem and either clear the password or invoke chroot so you can use the passwd command.  Unmount, reboot, you can login.
