Despite it's Roman roots, modern pizza as you know it was invented in America as a way to feed urban workers a complete one handed lunch in a hurry.  So here's a shocker, we'll call it what we damned well please.  Actually, the term "pizza pie" is regional, like the term "soda pop".

Some Italian Americans call it a a tomato pie, but most Americans call it pizza.

    It's a reference to a circle.

It's close enough to other kinds of pies anyway. What else would you call it, topped flat bread?

And they don't really call it that anyway.

90% of Americans or more refer to it as "Pizza", not "pizza pies".

Pi (math) can be explained by pizza and Pi sound like pie, so naturally Americans will associate the two.  So when Americans say "pie", it is a reference to Pi.

Americans are smarter than what most non-Americans believe...

The word "pizza" has a broader meaning in Italian, or to be more precise in some regions of Itlay pizza has a wider meaning and is often used for dishes that and English speaker would call a pie if trying to describe.  "Pizza pie" is a tautology which sprang up in Italian-American communities with south Italian roots.  Here are some Italian "pizzas" we'd call pies:

This one isn't always called pizza in Italian but you can see that it's the ancestor of the American deep dish pizza:

Sfincione can be layered with filling AND more filling on top of the crust!
