How do I start a non profit charity?

I have this amazing idea that is going to help so many kids, and it’s actually going to work. I planned it all out, and I’m so excited to get it going!! I just don’t know how to actually set up the non profit.

I’m going to take $100,000 and put it into some account and have it earn interest and take that money to pay for the charity. I want this charity to go on forever and be something that I can pass down to my children to look after when I am older.

Where do I begin?? This is a very broad question, and I realize that, but I don’t know where to begin to start making my idea turn to reality

Thanks!

    Nice idea, but at today's rate your $ will return about $1,000 a year.  {Start with google, then ask a lawyer to set it up.}

    You don't just set up a non-profit.  You have to apply to become a non-profit and there is criteria for that.  You have to have a business and be approved for a non-profit.  Consult a business lawyer who will get you going on it, but you had better know more than what you mentioned here, which is nothing.  Helping kids doesn't mean much of anything.

    Lay off the dope kid. Where are you going to get $100k?

    Do you know how much interest is on $100k?  At current 1% savings rates, thats $1000 a year.

    If you're serious about starting a business, including a nonprofit, the thing you don't want to do is ask a bunch of clueless anonymous Yahoos on an internet message board how to do it. You might as well flush your money down the toilet.

    You need competent legal and accounting advice on how to set up and operate a business entity. It's like flying a plane. If you think you're going to get a couple tips, then jump into the cockpit and fly the plane, you're going to end up in a pile of flames in the woods in about ten seconds.
