Football is the only major sport where the ball is carried on foot toward a goal for the purpose of scoring. Yes, there is passing, but that's just a way of transporting the ball to a teammate who may have more open space to carry the ball on foot.
In hockey the players slide the puck along the ice toward the goal
In basketball players must dribble the ball when moving and cannot carry it more than 2 steps.
In baseball the ball is rarely carried and when it is, it is not carried toward a goal in an attempt to score.

All words mean what the speaker and listener mutually agree upon in order to facilitate communication. What Americans call football is different from what non-Americans call football. Stop crying about it.

The brown thing they throw around is a football. It makes sense to name the game after the ball. Baseball and basketball do the same thing.

The game of football existed for over a thousand years before anyone even considered making it against the rules to touch the ball with the hands. Soccer was invented in the 1800s. Football existed for centuries before that.
Yes, American football is very different from the original game of football but Rugby and soccer are too.
