A cylinder with a moveable piston on top, free to move up and down, contains one mole of an ideal gas initially at a temperature of Ti=4.0°C?

A cylinder with a moveable piston on top, free to move up and down, contains one mole of an ideal gas initially at a temperature of Ti = 4.0°C. The cylinder is heated at a constant pressure of 1.00 atm, and it expands to three times its original volume.

(a) Calculate the new temperature Tf of the gas (in K).(b) Calculate the work done (in kJ) on the gas during the expansion.

      a) Use PV=nRT to obtain initial Vol. 1(8.314)(4 +273)/101.3 x 10^3 pa

      = 0.02273m^3

    At constant pressure,

    T'/T = V'/V

            =3V/V= 3

    so, final Temp.

    T'= 3T

       = 3(4C + 273K)

    = 831K

    b)

    W=P(V'-V)

    W=P(3V-V)

    2PV

    2(101.3 x 10^3)(0.02273m^3)

    = 4.6kJ
