A sample of gas in a cylinder is compressed by a piston at a constant pressure of 0.800 atm. ?

A sample of gas in a cylinder is compressed by a piston at a constant pressure of 0.800 atm. The volume of the cylinder decreases from 7.50 L to 3.00 L, while at the same time 340 J of energy leaves the gas by heat.

(a) What is the work done on the gas (in J)?(b) What is the change in its internal energy (in J)?

    Given Pressure (P) = 0.800 atm =  0.8 x 101325 Pascual

    Volume V1 = 7.50L = 7.5 x 10^-3 m^3

                 V2 = 3.00L = 3.0  x 10^-3 m^3

    dQ= -340J by convention negative sign

    a) work done on the gas dw= pdv

    w = p(V2-V1) => 0.8 x 101325x (-4.5 x 10^-3)

                         => -364.77J

    dq=dv + dw

    dv= dq -dw

        = -340 -(-364.77)= 24.70J

        dv= 24.70J

    This shows internal energy increase .
