I think it depends, for myself I was wandering around in the world a lot, but I felt very lost, and then my pursue of God began.
I did a lot of different bible studies seeking for answer.
One of the best online bible study was biblestudyforall.org,
As I was doing bible study, I was able to find a true meaning within life was to serve God in the benefit of all people.
I know that many people find it in different forms, so I can't say "This" is necessary it. But I hope you will find yours, try many different things and stay in God.
