MacArthur was a good General but also a shocking self promoter as many Generals were with possible political ambitions.  I think Admiral Nimitz was one of the most important leaders of the Pacific war as it was the Navy that made it impossible for the Japanese to keep expanding their empire in the pacific after the battles of the Coral Sea and the Battle of Midway, and struggling to defend the islands they had conquered.  Nimitz just did his job well and was not seeking publicity from it as MacArthur did.

  The navy under Nimitz kept the lines of communications and supply open to Australia where America had their base of leadership in the south pacific.  From Brisbane, Australia, MacArthur ran the war to force the Japanese forces back to Japan.  I don't think there was any one thing he did that really stood out but he ran a hard important part of the war and did it well, even if he did a few things that were only to make himself look better than he really was.  

The Battle of the Coral Sea was when the war started to turn in favour of the allies .

It wasn't necessary to succeed at the island hopping campaign. MacArthur got his way despite opposition f/ Nimitz and maybe the president. This part I'd have to look up. 

General Douglas MacArthur was more than pissed that Imperial Japan invaded his beloved Philippines. Mac is Scottish, Mc is Irish.

When he learned to capitalize the proper names MacArthur, Japanese and World War 2 everything started going better for him.

Can't think of any... past 'island hopping' as a strategy but that wasn't his call alone to make.
