Has any fanciful beliefs ever lead someone to upset the balance of nature or trigger the depletion of wildlife or even environmental hazards?

Like whether if it'd be religion or a superstition.

Living just for the now not caring what you are possibly creating in the future has destroyed much. Some do not care what their children's children will inherit!

The Christian belief system was at the heart of the expansion of nearly every empire in modern history (starting with the Romans, then the Crusades, Inquisitions, Conquistadors, the British, Puritans/Pilgrims, etc. etc.)

No other ideology has ever come close to spurring on the genocide of indigenous populations, depletion of wildlife, and destruction of nature that Christianity has.

To be clear, I don't blame Christianity itself - only the way that it has been used by opportunists.
