Yes, they keep active, including intense practices. But they aren't eligible to play in the games unless they are activated prior to a game.

Yes. Their routine is similar to the "extended spring training" camps that happen every (normal) season. They have daily workouts, pitchers throw bullpen sessions and hitters take BP.
