I believe they are both correct. The have different presentations. "Much time", much is an adjective. "A lot of time" lot is a pronoun, "of time" is a prepositional phrase - of is the preposition, time would be the object of the preposition".
If you break the sentences down into the basic sentence. The first would be "I spend a lot", the second would be I spend "time". Because you are trying to express that you spend time studying, I might select " I spend much time". However, "I spend a lot of time is more coloquial.
