Why are school lunches in the USA so unhealthy?

Because of corrupt government making rulings like "battered french fries are a fresh vegetable" as well as pizza is a fresh vegetable.

Potatoes are cheap, so when a school lunch must contain a vegetable, what vegetable are they going to inlcude and more so what vegetable are children going to choose.

$$$$. Unhealthy food is way cheaper than healthy. It is all about the money saved, not about kid's health.

Because they are more food than water and you need to eat more water based foods, like fruits and vegetables, because it's your job to feed the rest of the world and if you're not eating water diluted foods and feeding the rest of the world then you must not be very healthy so your food must not be healthy.  

Yeah, it doesn't make sense to me either but that's the gist of what the propaganda and bureaucratic bullshit are really telling you about your food and diet. 

Probably for a couple of reasons:

One is that during the Obama administration there was an initiative to make school lunches healthier.  Many conservatives lost their minds for some reason, cried "government over-reach" and generally went nuts. 

Another is that, let's face it - kids (at least most kids) like junk food. When they try to serve healthier foods, a lot of kids turn their noses up at it and it ends up in the trash.

Finally, as others note, the budgets for school lunches are meager - and many school kitchens no longer actually cook meals any more. They may not have the money or resources to serve things like a lot of fresh vegetables and such. 

Don't know. They're not even remotely as good as these, that's for sure (one is from schools in France, one is from schools in Brazil, one is from schools in Greece and one is from schools in Finland)

It really depends on the school district and their budget.  We live in an upper middle class area and the school lunch are actually quite good.  The kids all like them.  They have a chipotle- like station, a well stocked salad bar (premade this year), build your own sub (also premade this year), plus grill options like burgers, and a hot meal option.  In addition a grab and go case with yogurt parfaits and wraps and hummus trays.  I mean, it’s really quite good!

I suggest appealing to your BOE on who is responsible for choosing the food service options.  They won’t change unless people tell them to.  

In the US, it is all about Fast and Cheap. Nothing more. In the UK, Jaime Oliver has been trying for Years to get school lunch programs to serve quality stuff. 

We literally give the same food to criminals in jail. Our school children eat the same processed garbage as a convicted criminal. 

They used to be healthy.  But starting in the Reagan era, funding doe schools was cut.  The first thing schools cut was funds for cafeteria workers and equipment.  Now, a lot of the food is pre-made and purchased, quite literally, from the same corporations that supply prisons with food.  Cafeteria reheat it and serve it.  They don't have the money for training, personnel or equipment for real food.
