There is an external switch/button. It's been a while for me but the buses that my local transit company used had the switch above the right H/L. I saw the drivers use that switch a few times.

There’s always a button for that, usually hidden behind a flap.
On the buses my employer uses there is also a key-operated master switch next to that button so that we can shut down all the bus electrics except for the security alarm and cameras.

Most have an external door control, for emergency use as well as for use when the driver leaves the bus.
