What if the Russians had won the Space Race?

Well, don't be mistaken... the Russians had most the firsts in space - we had a few, but they had the biggies - first object into space, first animal in space, first man, first woman, first to the moon, first to image the far side of the moon, first to land an object on another planet...

The moon landing was a great feat; make no mistake... but it was really putting icing on a cake that had already been served. 

But... had they landed men first... then - the US, still striving to achieve *anything* first, might have re-drawn the finish line at Mars. Kind of a pity that didn't happen...

There would be a Russian flag on the moon.... and not much else would be different.  It was a pissing contest- what did the USA gain from the moon? 

Then it would have been just as irrelevant as America winning it.

Decades after the long defunct space age, it all seems like a bizarre practise out of some latter day dark ages. What were we thinking? Letting a bunch of egotistical world leaders make bigger and bigger ICBMs then test them out by strapping blokes to them and shooting them up into outer space?

I would like to say we have learned since those days, but the way the American election is going, I somehow doubt it.

There would be an Outland Stalingrad all over again when they ran into Nazis there.

The Soviets WERE the first to land something on the Moon. Luna 2 impacted the Moon on September 13 1959. 

nothing much would be different.  The US has a bunch of moon rocks that the Russians would have instead.
