Why do I self harm?

I feel like I just want to do it, I want to see blood but why? I feel just fine before hand but when I get the urge I just want to do it, I could happily rn go do something else and be fine but I’m choosing to cut. Is this a form of self attention seeking or is it common? I need to know asap

i think it is because you are desperate and want the attention of someone or people, you want someone to intervene and help you.

Nobody here is able to psychoanalyze you. People do this for different reasons. If you want to stop, I can tell you.

There's a wide variety of treatments. Very severe cases require months of intense therapy but many people do well with a treatment that's just a booklet and a few therapy sessions, usually 2 or 3.

Good news - treatments that only reduce self-harm are considered successful. The less you self-harm the stronger you are and better able to deal with the problems that led to your self-harm. Likewise, the better you are in dealing with the underlying problems the more it reduces the self-harm.

Whenever possible, treatment outside a hospital is best because therapy that teaches skills for the real world is best taught in the real world.

Freedom from Self-Harm: Overcoming Self-Injury with Skills from DBT and Other Treatments . This book has been endorsed by Marsha Linehan, who created DBT, the best treatment for borderline personality disorder, which has serious self-injury as a frequent symptom.  If you go to the Amazon ad, you'll see that readers GREATLY appreciate this book. One said, "This book helped me tremendously."

Yours is not just an anxiety problem. Several psychological issues can cause self-harm and it's more complex than simple anxiety or depression. Cutters are emotionally repressed types who internalize their feelings, so the cutting serves as a release mechanism,.. but you've lapsed beyond that. Some cutters develop a sadomasochistic fixation for the blood & gore; basically a fetish. They revel in the blood-letting and endlessly tinker with their wounds. At that point, they are no longer cutting to vent bad feelings, but bcuz it's actually a pleasurable sensation for them. My guess is that's where you are now. Find a therapist, pronto.

Cutting is due to deep psychological issues. You need professional help to explore your past to find out where these wounds are and deal with them in a positive manner.

Most people who self-harm do it because they suffer from an anxiety disorder, and the self-harming temporarily relieves anxiety.

It's not "common," but a fair number of anxiety-ridden young people do it.

You really need to see a therapist about it.  Medication and talk therapy could help you.
