How often is the runt of the litter the one that turns out to be the alpha?

Please don't tell me that it's impossible. My dog that you see in this picture had it happen to him. He was the runt and the last one picked of the litter, then he turned out to be the dominant one as he grew up.

How do you know he was the dominant one were the whole litter kept? How would anyone else know if this happens often?
