What does mean / meaning mean ?

In this sentence, 'mean' denotes what kind of message or idea you are trying to convey. It doesn't mean someone being hateful to another person.

Try this:

Person 1- You cannot get to Conway Plaza from here. 

P2- What do you mean? (what are you trying to tell me?)

P1- I mean (I am trying to tell you) this street you are on will not get you there. You need to take a different route.

It is an explanation similar to a definition.

What is it that you are trying to inform us about, exactly.  It is a way to ask for a better declaration of what idea you are trying to give us.  What do you mean? (it makes no sense to me, so try again and use words that, together, make clear sense).

Can sometimes be used in jest (ironically), to say "hey, that is obvious buddy, you don't need to say it".

"What do you mean?" "What thought do you intend to convey?"
