What should I look for when buying car tires?

Quality and price are the main considerations.  Buy Goodyear.

Any tyre works fine in the dry. However the wet braking distance of some cheap tyres especially Chinese ones with copycat names , are dangerously long compared to premium tyres. 

People will come here and say, I just drive around town, never drive fast, cheap tyres will do me. 

One day you might need that grip, and then you’ll wish you hadn’t gone for the cheapest. 

For most cars, cheap tyres come in at £40-50 each and premium £80-100. Considering they’ll probably last at least 50% longer, you aren’t saving much with the cheap tyres and risking your life. 

I always take the view , that decent tyres cost less than a crash.

price and quality , some last longer or handle the wet better , cheap tyres are cheap and over expensive arent worth the money , as i said good price , good quality and good in the wet .

You're not going to be cornering at 2gs on a race track. If you're just puttering around town and you drive safely, inexpensive walmart tires will work fine. You can spend more money on more expensive tires, and yeah sometimes the tires priced 2x as much will have slightly better handling on wet roads. But if you're just trying to save money and commute back and forth, tires arent that important. Cheap ones from walmart will work fine. Look for ones that have a long mileage warranty.

Price.  The higher the cost the better the condition of the tire.  Though, you do want the right size for your car too, so that means a second look.  If at a tire store ask them.  You can buy new or somewhat used(at a discount)

Kind of hard to recommend a brand and type of tire for you when I have no clue what type of vehicle you need tires foror how much money you have to spend! 

Proper size, load and speed rating for your vehicle. Proper tread pattern for the driving you will be doing. A price you can afford that includes all of the above.
