In almost all species, the crocs have broader snouts. The one exception is not found in FL or PR. To be sure, look at the reptile when its mouth is closed. Alligators and caimans will not show any teeth. In crocs, the fourth tooth will be visible. At least in FL, there is a habitat difference. Alligators stay pretty much in fresh water and the crocs prefer brackish or salt water. Caimans are identified by a bony ridge in front of the eyes.

Crocos have pointy snouts. Alligators have more rounded snouts with a wider tip. Crocos live near salt water habitats. Alligators prefer freshwater although they may move into crocodile territory when there is a seasonal drought. They have to move back to freshwater as soon as the drought ends because they have to get rid of the excess salt. Caimans are similar to alligators but smaller in size.

"Gator" is a slang term for alligator.

Crocodiles tend to have a more narrow snout.

A small crocolid is a caiman
