Racism is a set of beliefs or feelings that imputes intrinsic characteristics to people based on race.  Generally when we refer to racism we're thinking of people who dislike, or "hate", one particular race.

Segregation is a set of practices which involve the exclusion or separation of people by race.  Legal segregation in the US ended in the 1960s with the passage of the Civil Rights Act.  But racism remains.

Classic racism is the belief that one group of people possess different behavioral traits corresponding to physical appearance and can be divided based on the superiority of one race over another. Segregation is a setting apart or separation of people or things from others or from the main body or group.  In the case of the segregation of people it can be self segregation, informal segregation or formal, legal segregation typically based on ethnic, racial, religious, or other minority group differences from the dominant majority.

Racism is the belief that there are fundamental differences between races. This term has come to mean discriminating against people based on race and ethnicity etc.

    - This has been demonstrated to be false, in that there is basically no real race differences between people and the so called races have much more variance than there is between the races.

Prejudice should be mentioned as this is often the correct term to use. Basically believing everyone within a group is the same. Meet one black person who is a criminal and you think all black people are criminals, meet one racist cop and you think all cops are racist.

Segregation is about ensuring a division among people. Catholics can't marry protestants, Muslims can't marry Hindus, black and white people can't go to the same school, men and women can't socialise together in public.

Segregation is physically separating people by color. Racism is anything that discriminates against someone because of their color
