I live in West Virginia.  It is by no means perfect, and absolutely has a number of problems (opioid epidemic, poverty, poor health), but I love it here.  It is a beautiful state and there is so much to see and do if you enjoy the outdoors.  While there are no large cities, and the types of activities and amenities that tend to go along with cities, there are large cities within a relatively short drive of most areas of WV.  The people are amazing - friendly, helpful, generous, engaging.

The cost of living is relatively low, but job opportunities can be somewhat limited.  There are certain fields generally in high demand, but it can be difficult to find some types of steady work.  Pay is relatively low in many fields, but that is offset a bit by the low cost of living.

No, I'd prefer Virginia where I have family if I were to move.

The people that live there probably think it is, but I prefer to stay in Texas.

Andrew Zimmern is a food network/travel personality. He's the one who went all over the world and ate the strangest foods he could fine. Things like live earthworms and maggot cheese.

I saw him do a show where he was asked to judge a food fair in West Virginia - some annual event. He talked a lot about how he had been there many times and just loved the people and the place. Certainly the local people on the show were earthy.

But the point being that just about no place is actually about statistics unless it is triple the murder rate or something like that. If it's the place for you then the fact that the economy there is struggling doesn't mean so much.

West Virginia is Appalachia - mountain people even if they don't live in the mountains. Dolly Parton country.

But yes, all that the other answer says is true, too.

Statistically West Virginia is one of the worst states to live in. Obviously there's a considerable degree of variation to be found in all 50 states, but West Virginia is nearly always ranked towards the bottom when it comes to quality of life and just about everything else. I certainly wouldn't want to live there.
