How can I grow zone 10a plants in zone 11b?

I am considering moving to Aleialei Atoll in 2021 and would like to know if there is a way to create a cooler micro-climate? People in the north try to make warm ones like on Salt Spring Island but how do you make a cool one?

  • Aleialei Atoll doesn't even exist on this Earth. No place by that name exists on any valid official maps or gazeteers. This makes it impossible to move "there"- unless you somehow find it in some parallel universe!

If you're indeed a U.S. citizen, you have multiple realistic options to easily move without a passport to places that aren't imaginary fiction.  Southernmost Florida has areas of 10b climates and so does Hawaii at mid-elevations, for example.

If you do live in a cooler climare such as a 6a to 6b zone, there are many interesting plants that can be tried there for now in spots that Lee Ann mentioned in her second paragraph.

You can try planting where there will be afternoon shade....

In the north, we need to protect warmer zoned plants from the winter wind. We can cheat a zone by planting on the south side of buildings where the plants get sun and are protected from winds coming from the north.

My guess is you would reverse that. Plant on the east side of buildings where they will be protected from afternoon sun. Or plant in the shade of trees.
