Why is it that you walk into a boutique and the sales girl says "Are you shopping for a particular occasion?"?

I was also in a store shopping for underwear.  The sales woman asked "Can I help you find a particular size?  I was like "The underwear are arranged by size, so I think I got it."  Then a young female customer walked in.  When asked if she needed help with anything the girl replied "I'm just looking for pajama bottoms for my mom."  (There was a small rack about 3 foot wide of PJ bottoms.)  The sales woman said "Any particular color?"  I am particularly puzzled by the underwear store.  Can't women just browse the store and just choose whatever they like?

    I just usually say, "No thanks. I'm just browsing," without making eye contact.

    Maybe the sales people are bored, or feel that they are doing something good by giving the shopper a lot of personal attention.

    I, personally, prefer to shop without them constantly hovering over me.

    But rather than blaming them, I just realize that it's my antisocial nature;

    I don't think they are doing anything wrong.

    Most stores now think customers want that personal touch.  I find it annoying.

    Why are you letting these simple, courteous questions upset you so much? Remember that when someone asks you a question you are NOT OBLIGED to answer it in detail. You can just smile pleasantly and say, "Oh not really" or "I'm fine thanks" and just get on with browsing.  Your body language helps too: don't turn round and face her as if you were willing to engage in an actual conversation, but keep looking at the clothes and just glance briefly at her while you answer.

    Some people DO appreciate a little help. If you bite the head off an assistant who offers help, she may be reluctant to offer help to someone else who might actually need it but be too shy to ask.

    They are trying to help, yes, and in a formulated way. Also displaying specialist knowledge because 'occasion' [wear] is part of women's fashion nomenclature. I should run with it and relax, you might meet someone nice.

    Doesn't bother me at all myself & mind you, those workers are just trying to be helpful to customers & they're literally TOLD to greet the customers like that. Get a grip.

    I know I agree!!! I understand they can say if you need anything let me know! But them always asking things like that is annoying! I know it may be their job, but still! I agree with you!
