Siding is the planks of wood, metal, plastic or composite material on the sides of a timber framed house.

Replacing the shingles on your home would be considered roofing.
Siding is protective material attached to the exterior side of a wall of a house. It can be made of many materials including wood, vinyl, aluminum to name a few. If you were to add or replace the material it would be called siding.
