Why does the basement smell???

Alright. Recently I noticed a strong septic type smell in my basement. I tried to find the source then a day or two later it was gone. Then it came back. Then it went away. I'm really confused by this... Any ideas as to why I only sometimes get this smell down there and how to stop it from happening??

As both the other posts stated …. it’s very likely the floor drain.

You can buy a floor drain odor stopper or backflow preventer that will prevent the that smell.

I believe sureseal has a retro fit for the odor ….and there are several types and brands for backflow …check Amazon.

maybe there's a floor drain whose trap has dried out?  or same for washing machine drain?

Locate any drains down there and pour some water into them. They might have dried up. Water keeps the sewer fumes from coming up into a room.
