This Tom guy and saint Vyacheslav Krasheninnikov both said that once you hide: no documents / no electronics / etc. so that nothing holds you back and you won’t go back into the city ‘cuz police will stop to chip you if you decide to go back. Mafia I & II are more linear than III, you follow the story, which is great in both games. There is free roam but the worlds aren't as expansive as something like Grand Theft Auto. 

Yes, in the first two games you play as Italian American men who join the mafia. The first one is set in the 1930s, the second one is set in the 1940s and 50s.

I recommend Mafia DE, it's a great remake of the original Mafia I and more suited to modern gamers, I grew up with the original but it's incredibly dated now. I've never played the remaster of Mafia II, but I've heard it's a shitshow. I'm not sure if they've sorted it out or not. 

look i played them all and mafia 1 and 2 are better than mafia 3 period  unless you played  the original mafia 1-2,   because they are virtually the same, in terms of plot and storyline especially mafia 2,   although it does have a GTA style instant missions mode  which can be quite fun  however the revamped mafia 1   really does look very nice if you have a video card powerful enough

No, they're both remakes of older games that weren't sandboxes. The stories are much more linear and extras are more about collectables.
