You got turned around. In other words going in the opposite direction. That is, than you wanted to go.
Also you should phrase that first part: "Last year I was in THE forest."

It means the person's sense of direction got confused and he no longer knew the way to go.

It means you kept turning in different directions until you weren't sure any more what was the right direction to go. So you got lost.
