I agree; of the two breeds the basset hound HANDS DOWN.  Toy breeds can be easily dropped and hurt or squeezed too hard.  Yorkies can be prone to nip, out of a defensive nature.  A calm, slower moving breed is much better for kids, but in doing rescue we NEVER advocated for anyone to get a dog who had any child UNDER age 6.  

Before age 6, kids NO NOT understand "cause & effect" - that you should not kick, chase, harass, climb on, pull the ears or tail of a dog or tease a dog (with food or a toy). or it can LEAD to being bitten, regardless of breed.

Probably the Basset Hound, little kids couldn't kill it by handling a small puppy.  Little kids don't know their own strength or the proper way to handle a little tiny puppy.

Of the two, for me it would be the Basset every time.   They are a pack animal and in lieu of a canine pack, their humans become their pack.    However, we never sold a pup to a family with kids of under 5.    10 week old Basset puppies are already heavy and small kids could be knocked over by a happy enthusiastic Basset.    And very young kids will be attracted by the long ears of the Basset, and tease them to the point the hound might actually bite.

A 'pooh' anything should be avoided.   This messing around with long established breeds by BYBs is done to part new owner from their money.
